Chasing the Midnight Sun: Destinations Where the Sun Never Sets

Deeksha Dutta

There are some places on Earth where the sun refuses to set, offering an experience so surreal that it feels like stepping into a dream. Imagine long days that stretch into magical nights, where dusk never fully falls and the sun hovers just above the horizon, casting a warm glow across the landscape. These places, known for their ‘midnight sun’, occur within the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, where the tilt of the Earth's axis allows the sun to stay visible for up to 24 hours a day. If you’re a traveler seeking the extraordinary, here's a guide to the best destinations where the sun never sets.

1. Norway – The Land of the Midnight Sun

Norway's rugged beauty is complemented by the natural wonder of the midnight sun, particularly in the far north. The Lofoten Islands, situated above the Arctic Circle, are a prime destination for travelers who want to witness the sun shining through the night. From May to July, the midnight sun dazzles with 24 hours of daylight, allowing for endless exploration. Whether you're hiking through dramatic fjords, kayaking in the calm waters, or simply enjoying a midnight barbecue on the beach, Norway offers an unmatched experience for adventurers.

2. Iceland – An Otherworldly Phenomenon

Though Iceland is known for its volcanic landscapes and ethereal beauty, the country is also a prime location to witness the midnight sun. During the summer months, particularly in June, the sun barely sets, and Reykjavik, the capital, enjoys up to 21 hours of daylight. The golden glow creates an atmosphere that transforms the city, allowing travelers to explore the natural wonders of the Golden Circle or dip in the Blue Lagoon under a sky that never darkens.

3. Sweden – A Sun-Soaked Summer in the North

In the northernmost reaches of Sweden, the midnight sun reigns supreme. In places like Abisko and Kiruna, located above the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set from late May to mid-July. This magical period is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking in the Swedish Lapland, watching wildlife, or simply lying back and basking in the sunlight until the early hours. A truly unique experience is the chance to enjoy a meal at 2 AM under the bright glow of the sun, surrounded by vast wilderness.

4. Finland – The Land of the Midnight Sun

Finland offers one of the most tranquil and peaceful experiences of the midnight sun, particularly in the northern regions like Lapland. From June to July, the sun never dips below the horizon, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for those seeking relaxation and nature. Whether you’re gliding across a serene lake in a canoe or enjoying a quiet sauna by the water, Finland allows you to immerse yourself in nature while basking in the never-ending daylight.

5. Alaska – The Last Frontier of the Midnight Sun

Alaska, particularly in cities like Fairbanks, offers one of the most dramatic views of the midnight sun. In late June, the sun doesn't set for nearly 24 hours, allowing for incredible sightseeing, wildlife viewing, and outdoor adventure. Whether you’re taking a midnight hike, watching the Denali National Park’s landscape bathed in golden light, or simply experiencing the endless daylight in a cozy Alaskan cabin, the summer days here are impossibly long.

6. Canada’s Yukon Territory – Where Daylight Stretches Forever

Canada’s Yukon Territory is one of the best places in the world to witness the midnight sun, especially around Whitehorse. For about 30 days in the summer, the sun stays visible at all hours of the day, providing endless daylight for outdoor activities such as canoeing, hiking, and wildlife viewing. This natural phenomenon is a must-see for travelers looking to embrace the raw, unspoiled beauty of Canada’s northern wilderness.

7. Russia – Siberia’s Endless Days

Siberia, known for its vast wilderness and remote landscapes, also experiences the phenomenon of the midnight sun. In cities like Murmansk, located above the Arctic Circle, the sun does not set for several weeks during the summer months. This gives visitors the opportunity to explore the untamed landscapes of Siberia, from the Arctic tundra to the dense taiga forests, under a sun that lingers in the sky long into the night.

There’s something magical about the idea of time standing still, where the sun never sets and the world remains bathed in its light. These destinations are perfect for travelers who want to experience something truly extraordinary—days that feel endless and nights that never truly fall. Whether you're exploring the Norwegian fjords, soaking in the serenity of Finnish lakes, or hiking under the eternal daylight in Alaska, the midnight sun offers a unique and unforgettable adventure.

Trains allowing pets: Indian Railways allow pets only if the train has a first-class AC compartment or if they pet is in a luggage van. Usually, the station manager’s permission is required, which is fairly simple.

Two Girls’ Itinerary for Traversing Spain

Tiyash Mukherjee

As you decide to embark on your journey to Spain, the second highest visited place in the world, it is an absolute delight for people of any age group. Spain is a land of vibrant colours, humour, culture, and a delightful environment which will keep you wanting for more. Surrounded with beaches, beautiful architecture, parks, and delicious food, it is the perfect spot for a relaxed yet adventurous getaway.
In this blog, I shall elucidate my journey through Spain. If you are an adventure junkie, you are in for a treat.
As we began planning our trip, we felt extremely overwhelmed by the detailed process. After days of tedious research and a successful trip later, I am confident enough to explicate and navigate you on your visit to Spain.
When you begin with your VISA process, it is customary to start a month or two early and it is also important to book your hotels and flight tickets before-hand. Get ready for a tedious procedure, unless you choose us and let us help you curate your journey.

Barcelona

We initiated our trip in Barcelona, a vibrant and joyous city, offering a beautiful concoction of sea, hill, serenity as well as an extricate nightlife. Our first encounter with a Spanish gentleman was at 3am, who was our hotel manager. What surprised us was how jubilant and vigorous he was, which almost made our exhaustion evanesce. One disadvantage in Spain is that, usually, the restaurants do not serve food at all times and have specific hours, which was a disadvantage for us a lot of times. Uber Eats, Deliveroo, etc usually deliver food however, they do not provide their services if you stay far from the city centre, and close after midnight.
The next morning, we went to the beach and always remember to take a towel if you want to sit around on the sand. If you are going any time before summer sets in, which starts in May, make sure to carry a thin jacket.
After we sunbathed for a while, we decided to visit the La Sagrada Familia, a church which has been under construction for almost 200 years. On reaching there, we realised unfortunately there were no tickets left for the day. Another point to note, always book your tickets to monuments way before hand, except for the Stadiums, which can be booked a day or two prior to your visit.
Never hesitate to go and try the local cuisine or the local drinks, as they are usually one of the best things you will be tasting. They make sure to add spices therefore the food is tasteful and aromatic, a necessity for the Indian crowd.
Buses are a good way to go but walking to places, which are not as far, is surely a better experience. The architectures, people and the lively music on the streets will definitely fill your heart. As we discovered Spain, we came across a variety of beautiful parks and ice creams parlours, there is nothing more fulfilling than just sitting and experiencing this beautiful city with a gelato in your hand.
As the days started going by, we made some friends and planned a dinner at a rooftop restaurant, which by the way, is a must try. Barcelona’s skyline is an absolute delight and should not be missed. For a better exposure, you can also get a ride on the ropeway, and visit the Montserrat Range for a day trip. It is fairly easy to get there via train and it is one of the finest day trips you can take. Eventually, our adventures that were lined up for the trip, began. We went for Scuba Diving, an important factor to note is, unless you have done Scuba Diving before, it is necessary for you to check the water and estimate your comfort. It is a splendid activity and the underwater dive was fascinating for me as a first timer.

-Costa Brava (Barcelona)

Next, we went to Costa Brava for a delightful kayaking and snorkelling experience. The cold water is alluring, but beware of starfishes. There is a good amount of hassle but your experience is definitely worth the hassle.
On our last night in Barcelona, we walked around the city until 12 am, enjoying the bustling city’s charms as we proceeded to visit other destinations.

Zaragoza, Valencia and Malaga

We made stops at these locations for a better revelation, but truthfully our main excuse would be, we did not want to travel for long hours. Our visit to Zaragoza, Valencia and Malaga, the lesser-known cities, were small and precise. If you are looking for a silent stay, with less crowd and serene beaches, these are absolutely for you. They are filled with monuments which leave you in awe. They all close down sooner and the streets become deserted by 8pm, and there is a language barrier there as most people do not understand English. Patience and perseverance are the key here.

But since we were looking for the thrill, we decided to have a longer stay in Madrid and Seville.

Madrid

In Madrid, we started exploring the city and its beautiful architecture. As the capital, it holds the highest standards, therefore, the paella you try there or the churros, will never disappoint. Try to stay in the city centre, for a better and easy commute.
We tried the Paella the day we reached Madrid and it was absolutely delicious. After some rest, we went to visit the El Retiro Park and Real Jardín Botánico. We came across a beautiful Crystal Palace nestled beside a lake in the El Retiro Park, which a sight to behold. As we stayed right in the centre of the city, there were a varied number of restaurants in sight.
The next day rolled in and we decided to explore the Royal Palace of Madrid, Temple of Debod; along with that the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the long wait in the lines led us to the startling history of this wonderful land. Another addiction that we culminated in Madrid were their churros and their wonderful sandwiches which would vitalise us for the day.
One night we came across a bar where Flamenco Performances were being held, and I would recommend everyone to see it. We were lucky enough to be able to speak to a waitress who told us how it had its roots in Kathak, the Indian dance form. There are several things to explore in Madrid and be ready to walk around; that is the best way to explore the beautiful capital.

Seville

We had saved our special treat, for our last few days, in Seville. Since, we visited in April, we got to be a part of the Feria de Abril, where you get to experience the Spanish culture closely. No matter how well you dress, remember that you will still be underdressed. The women as well as the men dress up in their fanciest traditional outfits and arrive at the Feria in their horse-drawn carriages. A must-visit after the Feria would be the Plaza de Espana, and if you are a fan of Star Wars, you are bound to spend a few hours in there. The ethereal beauty that this place holds, is exquisite.
Always make sure to check the opening times as well as the ticket availability before you decide to visit as there are several times when they keep the monuments closed.
Finally, we decided to go Skydiving in Seville after all the chaotic festivities of the Feria were over. Now, it is important to remember that if you want to go Skydiving on your own, you need training for about a week to a minimum of 3/4 days. Our Dive was extremely special to me, it was like a song, which started with a terrible beat and ended in tranquil tones. The fear turns into a beautiful flight, I felt like a free bird. The view was incredible and I was filled with nothing but pure joy.
After a hectic trip, we stumbled upon the Aire, an ancient bath, offering luxurious relaxation which energizes you for your upcoming hustles.
With that, we only engaged in simple and calming escapades through the city, which included a calm day at the beach, simple dinner nearby and ordering-in good food while we enjoyed the rest of the night watching movies.

Where did we stay?
We were staying in hotels. If you want to stay in the city centre in a good hotel, make sure you have a big budget, otherwise you can choose to stay far from the centre at good hotels for a cheap price.

How did we travel around?
We usually used trains to travel from city-to-city. And inside the cities, we would use Ubers, buses and walk around to reach the destinations.

Food and Drinks we enjoyed
The local cuisine was divine, offered a range of foods. Must try: Paella, Tapas (snacks), Churros, Tacos from Taco Bell, Gelato, Lemon Fanta, Sangria, Tinto de Verano and Aperol Spritz.

Things to Remember
Make sure to beware of pick-pocketers, book your tickets well in advance, keep some snacks handy at all times and enjoy every moment

Common Mistakes Indians Make When Booking an Airbnb in India

By Deeksha Dutta

In recent years, the landscape of travel and hospitality in India has undergone a significant transformation, thanks to the emergence of platforms like Airbnb. This global service has not only reshaped how people experience travel but has also impacted local economies and cultural exchanges in ways that were previously unimaginable.

Airbnb's entry into the Indian market has been met with enthusiasm from both travellers and hosts. For travellers, the platform offers a diverse range of accommodation options that go beyond traditional hotels. From cozy apartments in bustling cities like Mumbai and Delhi to serene cottages in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, Airbnb provides unique and personalized experiences tailored to individual preferences. This variety appeals to a broad audience, including international tourists looking for a more authentic experience and domestic travellers seeking new adventures.

For hosts, Airbnb presents an opportunity to monetize their extra space and engage with a global audience. In a country where many families have additional rooms or properties, Airbnb offers a way to generate income and make use of unused resources. This economic opportunity is particularly valuable in smaller towns and rural areas, where traditional hospitality infrastructure may be limited.

Airbnb has revolutionized the way people travel, offering unique accommodations and personalized experiences. However, booking an Airbnb in India can sometimes lead to unexpected challenges if not approached carefully. Here are some common mistakes Indians often make when booking an Airbnb, and how to avoid them:

1. Ignoring Reviews and Ratings:
One of the biggest mistakes is not paying enough attention to reviews and ratings left by previous guests. These can provide valuable insights into the cleanliness, safety, and overall experience of the property. Always read through multiple reviews to get a balanced perspective before making a decision.

2. Overlooking Location Details:
In the excitement of finding a beautiful property, many people overlook the importance of location. In India, especially in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, traffic can be a major issue. Check the exact location of the Airbnb on a map and read about the neighbourhood to ensure it suits your needs in terms of accessibility and safety.

3. Not Communicating Clearly with Hosts:
Effective communication with the host is crucial for a smooth experience. Before booking, clarify any doubts about check-in/check-out times, amenities provided, and house rules. Indians often assume details based on photos and descriptions, but direct communication can prevent misunderstandings.

4. Booking Solely Based on Price:
While budget is important, booking solely based on price can lead to disappointment. Cheaper options may lack amenities or be located far from attractions. Consider the overall value rather than just the nightly rate. Sometimes paying a bit more ensures a more comfortable stay.

5. Disregarding Safety and Security:
Safety should always be a priority when booking accommodation. Verify that the property has basic safety features such as fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and secure locks. Additionally, check reviews for any mentions of safety concerns in the area.

6. Not Reading the Fine Print:
Before confirming your booking, carefully read the listing details and house rules. Pay attention to additional charges, cancellation policies, and any specific requirements set by the host. Ignoring these details can lead to unexpected costs or misunderstandings during your stay.

7. Failing to Plan for Amenities:
Unlike hotels, Airbnbs may not always provide amenities like toiletries, kitchen essentials, or Wi-Fi. Check the amenities list thoroughly and pack accordingly. If something crucial is missing, communicate with the host beforehand to avoid inconvenience upon arrival.

8. Disregarding House Rules and Policies:
Cultural differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings regarding house rules. Ensure you carefully read and understand the host’s policies regarding check-in times, additional guests, smoking, and noise levels. Ignoring these could lead to uncomfortable situations or extra charges.

9. Not Considering Alternative Accommodations:
Airbnb offers a variety of properties, from entire houses to shared rooms. Consider your travel preferences and group size when choosing accommodation. Sometimes a homestay or guesthouse might offer a more authentic experience than a private apartment.

10. Rushing the Booking Process:
Finally, avoid making hasty decisions when booking an Airbnb. Take the time to compare options, ask questions, and ensure the property meets your expectations. Planning ahead reduces the chances of encountering surprises during your stay.

To summarize, reserving an Airbnb in India may be a rewarding experience if done with care and attention to detail. To avoid these typical blunders and be proactive in your planning, Barganza guarantees a comfortable and delightful stay wherever your travels take you in India. Happy booking with Barganza!

Haunted Places in India: A Journey into the Supernatural

By Deeksha Dutta

India is a land rich in history, culture, and spirituality, but it also harbours a plethora of haunted places that whisper tales of the past. For the adventurous traveller, these locations offer not just a glimpse into the supernatural but also a chance to immerse oneself in the eerie beauty and mystery that envelops them. Join us as we embark on a journey through some of India’s most haunted sites, where every shadow has a story and every corner holds a secret.

  • The Enigmatic Kuldhara Village, Rajasthan

Our journey begins in the arid landscapes of Rajasthan, home to the ghost village of Kuldhara. Established in the 13th century by Paliwal Brahmins, Kuldhara was once a prosperous settlement. However, legend has it that the village was abandoned overnight, leaving behind ruins steeped in mystery. The villagers fled to escape the oppressive tax regime imposed by the local ruler, who had set his sights on a beautiful daughter of the village chief.
Today, as you walk through the desolate streets and crumbling structures, you can almost feel the weight of the past. Visitors report eerie sensations, whispering winds, and the feeling of being watched. The village remains an enigmatic reminder of the stories that linger long after the inhabitants have gone.

  • The Haunting of the Savoy Hotel, Mussoorie

Next, we ascend to the misty hills of Mussoorie, where the Savoy Hotel stands as a majestic testament to British colonial architecture. Built in 1902, this hotel is not just famous for its luxurious accommodations but also for its ghostly resident, Lady Garnet Orme. Legend states that she was found murdered in her room, and her spirit has been said to roam the hallways ever since.
Guests have reported strange occurrences: the sound of footsteps in empty corridors, flickering lights, and the unmistakable chill in the air. As you sit in the grand lobby, sipping tea, you can almost sense the ethereal presence of Lady Orme, forever entwined with the fabric of this historical gem.

  • The Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan

No discussion of haunted places in India is complete without mentioning Bhangarh Fort, often regarded as the most haunted place in the country. Nestled at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve, this 17th-century fort is surrounded by dense forests and whispers of lost love and tragic tales.
According to legend, a wizard named Singhia fell in love with the beautiful princess Ratnavati, who was aware of his dark intentions. To thwart his advances, she used a magic potion, leading to the wizard’s demise. Before he died, he cursed the fort and its inhabitants, declaring that it would never flourish again. Today, the fort lies in ruins, and locals warn against entering after sunset. The eerie silence that envelops Bhangarh at dusk adds an unsettling aura to its already haunting atmosphere.

  • The Ghostly Tales of Shaniwarwada Fort, Pune

In Pune, the historic Shaniwarwada Fort stands as a monumental testament to Maratha architecture. Yet, beneath its majestic exterior lies a tragic story of betrayal and death. The fort was the scene of a gruesome murder during a power struggle in the 18th century. According to local lore, the young prince Narayan Rao was killed by his own uncle, and his anguished cries for help still echo through the fort’s halls.
Visitors often report hearing the prince’s cries at night, accompanied by a chilling breeze that sweeps through the fort’s ruins. The fort, with its imposing walls and elaborate gates, is not just a site of historical significance but also a poignant reminder of a tumultuous past.

  • The Cursed Villa of Dow Hill, Kurseong

In the serene hills of Kurseong, the Dow Hill Victoria Boys’ High School is known not only for its educational legacy but also for the chilling stories surrounding it. Locals speak of a ghostly figure that wanders the halls of the school, often spotted by both students and teachers. The legend of the “ghost of Dow Hill” has been passed down through generations, capturing the imaginations of those who visit.
The haunting tales often revolve around the sounds of footsteps echoing through the deserted corridors, despite the absence of people. The eerie atmosphere, combined with the beautiful colonial architecture, makes it uncanny yet an alluring place to visit.

India’s haunted places offer an intriguing blend of history and the supernatural. Each site tells a story, drawing visitors into a world where the past and present coexist in mysterious ways. From the ghostly apparitions of Kuldhara to the haunted corridors of Dow Hill, these locations beckon the brave-hearted to explore the unknown.

Exploring Peru: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

Deeksha Dutta

Peru, a captivating country in South America, offers an extraordinary blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu to the vibrant city life of Lima, Peru promises an unforgettable experience for every traveller. This guide will help you navigate your journey through this diverse and enchanting destination.

Ways to Get There:

·       By Air: The most convenient way to reach Peru is by flying into its capital city, Lima. Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM) is the primary international gateway, with direct flights available from major cities across the Americas and Europe. Depending on your starting point, you may need to connect through other international hubs.

·       By Land: For those who are already in the neighbouring countries, land travel is possible. Bus services from countries like Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile offer a scenic and cost-effective way to enter Peru, although this option can be a bit time-consuming.

·       By Sea: While less common, some adventurous travellers might arrive via cruise ships docking at ports like Callao, close to Lima.

Popular Destinations and Things to Do

·       Lima: Peru's bustling capital offers a vibrant mix of colonial architecture and modern flair. Visit the historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to admire the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral of Lima and the Monastery of San Francisco. For culinary enthusiasts, Lima is renowned for its world-class restaurants and street food, blending indigenous ingredients with global influences.

·       Cusco: Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders and colonial architecture. Stroll through the Plaza de Armas, visit the Sacsayhuamán fortress, and explore the San Pedro Market. Cusco also serves as the gateway to the Sacred Valley as well as Machu Picchu.

·       Sacred Valley: This picturesque region is home to stunning landscapes and important Incan sites like Ollantaytambo and Pisac. The valley's fertile land supports vibrant local markets and traditional weaving communities. It is an excellent spot for outdoor activities such as hiking and exploring ancient ruins.

·       Machu Picchu: The crowning jewel of Peru, Machu Picchu, is a must-see for any visitor. This iconic Incan citadel perched high in the Andes offers breathtaking views and a deep sense of history. The most popular way to reach Machu Picchu is by train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes, followed by a bus or a hike up to the site.

·       Arequipa and the Colca Canyon: Arequipa known as the "White City" for its stunning architecture crafted from white volcanic stones, is surrounded by dramatic landscapes. The nearby Colca Canyon, one of the world's deepest, provides opportunities for breathtaking treks and acts as a landmark for spotting the majestic Andean condor.

·       The Amazon Rainforest: For a unique ecological adventure, explore the Amazon Basin from Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos. Experience the incredible biodiversity, take guided tours through the rainforest, and immerse yourself in the rich culture of indigenous communities.

Accommodation:

Peru offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every budget and preference:

·       Luxury: High-end options include the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge near Machu Picchu and the Hotel Monasterio in Cusco. These properties provide top-notch amenities and exceptional service.

·       Mid-Range: Comfortable and affordable hotels and boutique lodgings are plentiful in cities like Cusco and Lima. Establishments such as the Casa Andina or Inkaterra offer a blend of comfort and local charm.

·       Low-Cost: For travellers on a tighter budget, hostels and guesthouses are available throughout Peru. Options like Pariwana Hostel in Cusco or Loki Hostel in Lima provide basic comforts and a social atmosphere.

 Cost of Travel

Peru is generally affordable compared to many other travel destinations. Daily expenses can range from:

·       Luxury: $200–$500 per night (high-end hotels, fine dining, private tours)

·       Mid-Range: $50–$150 per night (comfortable hotels, moderate dining, guided tours)

·       Low-Cost: $15–$50 per night (hostels, budget hotels, street food)

Additional costs include entrance fees to major sites, which can vary, along with that, transportation within the country. Booking activities and accommodations in advance can help manage costs and ensure availability.

Best Time to Visit:

The ideal time to visit Peru depends on your interests and the regions you plan to explore:

·       Machu Picchu and the Andes: The dry season, from May to September, is the best time to visit these areas, with clear skies and less rain. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds.

·       Amazon Rainforest: The wet season (November to April) is ideal for wildlife spotting as animals are more active, but be prepared for rain. The dry season (May to October) offers drier conditions but might mean fewer wildlife sightings.

·       Lima and Coastal Areas: Lima enjoys a mild climate year-round, but the best weather is from December to March, when it is warmer and sunnier.

Peru’s remarkable blend of ancient history, vibrant culture and stunning natural landscapes make it a must-visit destination. Whether you’re hiking the Inca Trail, savouring Peruvian cuisine, or exploring the rich heritage of its cities, Peru offers an experience like no other.

This guide will delve into the history of Kuthlur, its current appeal as an adventure hub, and tips for making the most of your visit.

A Glimpse into History

Kuthlur’s history is woven into the larger tapestry of Karnataka’s cultural and historical evolution. This village, believed to have been established during the Christian Era, has roots in ancient traditions and local folklore. Its name is derived from the Kannada word “Kuthu,” meaning “to dance,” which reflects the vibrant cultural practices of the village, including folk dances and local festivals.
Historically, Kuthlur has been influenced by various dynasties that ruled Karnataka, including the Chalukyas and the Hoysalas. The remnants of ancient architecture and temples in and around Kuthlur are from periods much before the Cholas, bearing testament to its rich past. These sites not only provide insight into the architectural styles of bygone eras but also serve as spiritual centres for local inhabitants.
The village has managed to retain its traditional charm while gradually adapting to modern influences. As tourism has grown, local communities have embraced the opportunity to showcase their heritage and natural resources, leading to Kuthlur’s recent recognition as an adventure tourism destination.

 The Allure of Kuthlur Today

Kuthlur is now a beacon for adventure enthusiasts. The village is surrounded by stunning landscapes—rolling hills, dense forests and picturesque rivers—making it an ideal setting for a variety of outdoor activities.

Here are some of the primary attractions and adventures that await visitors.

1. Trekking and Hiking

The most prominent attraction in Kuthlur is its extensive trekking routes. The nearby Seven hills offer trails for both beginners and seasonal trekkers. A popular trail leads to the hilltop viewpoint, where hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and forests. The treks are often accompanied by the melodic calls of local birds and the rustling of leaves, making it a serene experience.

2. Water Sports

Kuthlur is bordered by a river that offers a range of water sports activities. Visitors can indulge in kayaking, canoeing, and even river rafting, depending on the season and water levels. The thrill of navigating through gentle rapids while surrounded by natural beauty is an experience not to be missed.

 3. Cultural Experiences

In addition to adventure sports, Kuthlur provides an authentic cultural experience. Visitors can engage with the local community, participating in traditional cooking classes, folk dance workshops, and handicraft sessions. What Thailand's new visa rule from December 1, 2024 means for your next trip

Thailand had introduced temporary VISA exempt for a period of 60 days for India and 92 other countries. This allowed Indians to visit hassle-free, but it changes from 11th November, 2024. Now all VISA exempt travellers will need an ETA to enter Thailand.

From December 1, 2024, an exciting change will take place: all visa-exempt travelers, including those from India, will need to secure an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before embarking on their journey to Thailand. This new system, introduced by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promises to make the entry process smoother while helping the authorities monitor foreign visitors more efficiently.

The rollout will start with a pilot phase, and by June 2025, the ETA system will be fully integrated with Thailand’s e-Visa services, creating a unified and seamless experience for travelers. The entire process will be conducted online, from submitting personal details to receiving the ETA approval, which will be issued as a QR code for faster clearance at immigration. And the best part? It’s free!

So, what exactly is changing? Every visa-exempt traveler will need to apply for an ETA before each trip to Thailand. Once approved, visitors can enjoy up to 60 days in the country, with an option to extend their stay by an additional 30 days.

However, some things remain the same. Despite the ease of the new ETA system, travelers still need to be mindful of their stay limits. The system will monitor visa-exempt nationals closely, and overstaying could lead to fines or penalties. Plus, even with a valid ETA, immigration officers at the border still hold the final authority to grant or deny entry.

As Thailand gears up for this new era of travel, visitors can expect a streamlined, tech-savvy approach to entry, making future trips more convenient while keeping essential rules in place.

Kotagiri: The Secret Pearl of the Nilgiris!

Nestled snugly in the emerald embrace of Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiri Hills, Kotagiri is a whispering serenade of serenity and splendor, just waiting for you to unravel its hidden charms.

Deeksha Dutta

Picture this: a tiny hill station nestled in the Nilgiris, just 20 km from Coonoor, 29 km from Ooty, and 72 km from Coimbatore. That’s Kotagiri for you – one of Tamil Nadu’s best-kept secrets and a top-notch tourist destination near Ooty. It’s the place you didn’t know you needed to visit until now!

Perched at a lofty 1793 meters, Kotagiri is the oldest and third-largest hill station in the Nilgiris, right after Ooty and Coonoor. Its name literally translates to “mountains of the Kotas,” a nod to the indigenous Kota tribe who once called this paradise home.

Trust me, it’s a must-see on your Ooty itinerary.

Once upon a time, Kotagiri was the British summer hotspot in the Nilgiris – that is, until they built a road from Mettupalayam to Coonoor. Two civil servants from the Madras government stumbled upon this gem while chasing outlaws. They named it Kotacherry. Unveiling Devprayag

Devprayag: Where Sacred Rivers Converge and Adventure Unveils

By Deeksha Dutta

In the heart of the majestic Himalayas, where the air is thin and whispers of ancient tales float on the breeze, lies the enchanting town of Devprayag. Here, amidst the towering peaks and verdant valleys of Uttarakhand, a miraculous union occurs. The mighty Bhagirathi and the serene Alaknanda rivers merge in a powerful embrace to give birth to the sacred Ganges, a river revered and worshipped by millions.

Devprayag, one of the five holy confluences known as Panch Prayag, is a place where the divine dances with the earthly. These sacred rivers, each with a story as old as time itself—Alaknanda, Dhauliganga, Nandakini, Pindar, Mandakini, and Bhagirathi—begin their journey in the Himalayas. They meet at different points, creating five mystical confluences that hold deep spiritual significance in Hinduism.

The legend of Panch Prayag is as captivating as the landscape itself. In the mists of ancient lore, it is said that Rishi Bhagirath, driven by unwavering devotion, meditated in Devprayag to bring the celestial Ganga down to earth. His prayers were answered, and the river descended from the heavens, filling the land with her divine essence. This sacred act transforms Devprayag into a pilgrimage site, a place where the soul seeks cleansing and the heart finds peace.

Perched at 830 meters above sea level, Devprayag is a sanctuary of pristine beauty and spiritual calm. The confluence point is a stunning spectacle where the turquoise-blue Alaknanda meets the greenish-grey Bhagirathi in a vibrant dance of colors. Ancient temples and ashrams dot the town, their presence is a testament to the enduring spiritual energy that permeates the air.

Every year, hundreds of devotees journey to Panch Prayag, their hearts heavy with sins and hopes for redemption. They immerse themselves in the sacred waters, believing in the rivers' power to cleanse their souls. Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag, and Devprayag are more than just geographical locations; they are the embodiments of human faith and devotion.

Devprayag, with its awe-inspiring natural beauty and profound cultural significance, is a destination where travelers can seek not only the splendor of nature but also the depths of spiritual enlightenment. It is a place where myths come alive, where the land itself seems to breathe with the whispers of gods and sages, and where every ripple in the river tells a story of devotion, redemption, and divine grace.

Located at an altitude of 3,650 meters (11,980 feet), this remote town offers an enchanting blend of breathtaking landscapes, ancient monasteries, and a peek into traditional Tibetan culture. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply seeking solace in the lap of the Himalayas, Kaza promises an unforgettable journey.

Here’s your ultimate guide to making the most of your visit:

Getting There

Kaza is accessible via road from Manali or Shimla, although the route from Manali is more commonly used. The journey itself is an adventure, winding through high mountain passes like Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks and barren valleys. It's advisable to travel during the summer months (June to September) when the roads are relatively safer and most accessible.

Things to Do

Here are 4 places that you must visit while in Kaza:

1. Tabo Monastery

One of the oldest continuously operating Buddhist monasteries in India, Tabo Monastery is highly revered in Tibetan Buddhism and is often compared to the Ajanta Caves for its significance and artistic heritage. The monastery is adorned with sculptures, paintings, and murals depicting sacred inscriptions, religious writings, and Buddhist deities. Ancient caves above the monastery are still used by monks for meditation.

2. Pin Valley National Park

Pin Valley National Park is the highest cold desert national park in India. It protects the priceless and endangered flora and fauna of Himachal Pradesh, including the elusive snow leopard. Photographers from around the world visit this park hoping to catch a glimpse of the big cat. The valley offers spectacular views of the snow-covered Himalayas and lush lowlands.

Unlocking the enigma of The Cintacor Island Resort

“Longing for the sun, here we come

To the island without name

Longing for the sun, here we come

On the island, many miles away from home.”

Scorpions

Well, in this case, we have a name for that ‘island’ and a location too. But before we go ahead and tell you the name, let us tell you something about the island. Situated on the Arabian Sea, it takes a 15-minute boat ride from the Karwar Port, Karnataka, to reach a private island that is covered in lush green forest and a state-of-the-art private resort that not only provides you with an excellent time to unwind and relax but also complete privacy and freedom from the maddening crowd of the city life.

Now a little history about the island. Back in Vasco Da Gama’s seafaring days, he discovered the island. Ever since that day, the Portuguese controlled and owned this beautiful turtle-shaped island. Nearly 400 years later, the island was handed over to an Indian local family, who later leased the Island to a group of luxury hotels. The island is ancient and it has seen a lot of major changes in dynasties, including the Vijaynagar Empire. Within the island, there is a fort which was built by Basilanga Nayak in 1705 AD to defend it from the British invaders. The ruins of the fort are still found on the island and is a place of interest. Without further ado, the name of the island is Kurumgad Island, and it has a lovely, picturesque private resort. Yes, you have guessed right, we are talking about the Cintacor Island Resort. The resort has 15 sea-facing cabins which can host a maximum of 45 guests, a restaurant, a bar, and an infinity pool from where watching the sunset is highly recommended. The best part of this resort is the sound of the rustling of leaves from the surrounding forest all over and the constant sound of the waves lapping up at the beach. You can set up some deck chairs, lose yourself in the sounds of nature, and indulge in a beautiful uninterrupted time with Mother Gaia.

The closest airport to Cintacor Island Resort is the Dabolim Airport, Goa and the closest railway station is Karwar Railway Station. From there you can take a cab and head directly to the Karwar port then you can take the ferry service to the Resort.

The closest island to the Cintacor Island Resort is Devgad Island where you can find a French Lighthouse which dates back to 1932. The lighthouse is manned by two people who are also the only two residents of Devgad Island. You can take a trip to the island which can be arranged by the Resort officials.

While on the island you can expect a total immersive experience with nature and the flora and fauna. The island is the habitat of otters, terrapins, and sea eagles. There are many jungle trails and vantage points from where you can see the Arabian Sea’s unbroken view. For miles, you would be able to see the blue oceans, the sound of waves, and the gentle sea breeze to keep you company. While hiking through the trails you can also see the temple of Lord Narsimha, who according to the local folklore had made his way through the creek that leads up to the island creating an intriguing rock formation fissure known as the Mystery Creek. However as per the geologists that is due to tectonic activities and earthquakes that took place 300 million years ago pushing up the bedrock and as a result created the fissure which is made up of rocks of antiquity.

This is another favourite tourist spot which is a short hike away from the resort. Apart from that if you are interested you can also partake in Jet Skiing, Banana Boat Riding, Dolphin watching, fishing, or experiencing the myriad marine life that wash up on the tidal pools, etc. The Resort authorities arrange all these things. The Resort is perched in the perfect location away from the cacophony of daily life which can serve as a Family and Romantic getaway for and with your loved ones. The experience will leave you rejuvenated and with a beautiful tan as you bask in the sun and lots of fun and intimate moments that you can treasure for life.

By Anwesh Ganguli

If you're a lover of both travel and books, then you're in for a treat. Nestled in our charming blue planet is a place known as Book Town, and its original name is Hay on Wye.

Situated on the southeast bank of the river Wye, it resides in the northeastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. This bookish town shares borders with Wales and Herefordshire, England.

Back in the early 60s Richard Boothe opened the first bookstore in the Old Fire Station which later by the 1970s turned into a full-fledged town with more than half a dozen bookstores. Hence, aptly the name “The Town of Books”. It is also said later Richard Boothe was the self-proclaimed King of the Hay and he made his horse the Prime Minister of the place.

What makes Hay special is its abundance of antiquarian bookstores, cozy pubs, and a quaint market with numerous antique shops.

Hay on Wye is a bibliophile's paradise, offering a plethora of bookstores catering to various genres, from bestsellers to beautifully bound antiquities. Nature enthusiasts can opt for hikes along the trails of Brecon Beacons National Park or kayaking in the scenic Wye River. For those seeking tranquility, camping amidst the mountains provides a serene retreat.

Among the town's attractions are Hay Castle, the Hay Market, Hay Buff, and its antique shops. The castle offers insights into its feudal past, while the bustling market showcases local produce and crafts every Thursday. Hay Buff offers breathtaking views of the Welsh Mountains on clear mornings.

And of course, the highlight for book lovers: the must-visit bookstores. Here are some recommendations: :
